Valium (diazepam) can be used to treat anxiety disorders and symptoms resulting from alcohol withdrawal (shakiness, hallucinations and agitation), as well as to relieve muscle pain in some cases. Take Valium only for as long as recommended by your health care provider. The usual period of treatment is 4 months – taking Valium for longer may cause an addiction and should therefore be discussed with your health care provider. Before you ask you doctor for a prescription make sure he knows that you have been diagnosed with liver disease, kidney disease, asthma, glaucoma, depression, any mental illness or if you have a history of suicidal thoughts, alcohol or drug addiction. Patients older than 55 may be required a lower dosage of this medicine as they may be more sensitive to this drug. Older patients should try to avoid falling when standing up.
